When we speak of hosting servers, there are three main categories - web hosting servers, VPS (virtual private web hosting servers) and dedicated hosting. Shared servers host many clients and hence the system resources per account are limited, VPS hosting give you more server configuration autonomy, but also influence other private virtual servers on the hardware node if utilized rashly, and dedicated hosting servers offer you the autonomy to do everything you think fit without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated hosting servers?

Dedicated hosting servers are traditionally much more high-priced than shared web servers or private virtual web hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The answer is rather simple. If your firm has a heavy resource-absorbing site, or simply has very explicit server architecture requirements, the most sensible option would be a dedicated hosting servers. For someone who is inclined to invest in security and reliability, the bigger price is not a concern. You acquire complete root-level access and can use 100 percent of the dedicated web server's system resources without anyone else using these resources and interfering with your websites.

Hardware configurations

The majority of hosting firms, incl. us at Webgear Hosting, provide several hardware configurations you can select from according to your needs. The hardware architectures offer different varieties of processors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and server disk drive sizes and different web traffic quotas. You can pick a web hosting Control Panel, which is handy software if you would like to utilize the dedicated hosting servers for website hosting purposes only and choose not to use a Secure Shell console for all the changes you will be making. We provide 3 types of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting Control Panel of your choice

If you are a confident Linux user (our web hosting servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based OSs), you could manage your dedicated hosting via a Secure Shell terminal only. That, however, could be inconvenient, particularly if you wish to give full server root privileges to someone else who has less technical experience than yourself. This is why having web hosting Control Panel software activated is a good idea. The Hepsia web hosting Control Panel tool that we offer does not include full server root access and is chiefly appropriate for somebody who owns many web pages that consume plenty of system resources, but prefers to administer the web sites, databases and email boxes through an easy-to-use Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting CPs, on the other hand, grant full root access and have 3 levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell web hosting accounts instead of using the dedicated hosting servers only for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated hosting servers and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your server, like an unresponsive Apache or a network outage, it is useful to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Webgear Hosting the system administrators monitor all dedicated hosting servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated hosting servers as well. Backups are also an additional feature - the web hosting distributor offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could choose a kind of RAID that would permit you to keep the same data on 2 hard drives as a protective measure in case of a server hard drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given full root privileges deletes something by mistake.
